Review
Mark Twain once said that “humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.” And it seems as though the writers of the Pitch Perfect franchise have taken this to heart with their latest installment, Pitch Perfect 3. The film delivers all the singing, dancing, and humor that fans have come to expect from the series, while also incorporating a refreshing new storyline that keeps things interesting.
For those who haven’t seen the first two films (although I highly recommend you do), Pitch Perfect follows an all-girl a cappella group named The Bellas as they navigate their way through college and beyond. In this third installment, we find our favorite Bellas struggling in their post-college lives. Beca (Anna Kendrick) is working at a recording studio but feeling unfulfilled, Chloe (Brittany Snow) is trying to make it as an exotic pets vet, and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) is performing with a traveling show for her own safety.
But when they get offered a chance to reunite and compete in a USO tour in Europe, they jump at the opportunity. Along the way, they meet other bands competing for the prize of opening for DJ Khaled (yes, he plays himself), including an all-female rock band and an all-male country group led by Ruby Rose.
What follows is a hilarious adventure that sees The Bellas once again embrace their love of music while also tackling new challenges. There are plenty of laughs throughout the film thanks to Rebel Wilson’s impeccable comedic timing and one-liners like “I’m pretty sure my sweat smells like Fanta now.” But what sets this film apart from its predecessors is its willingness to take risks with its characters and storylines.
One such risk comes in the form of an unexpected romance between Beca and Theo (Guy Burnet), a member of DJ Khaled’s entourage who becomes her love interest. This storyline could have easily fallen into the trap of being formulaic and predictable, but instead, it adds a new dimension to Beca’s character and provides a fresh take on the typical romantic subplot.
Another standout moment in the film is when The Bellas team up with the all-female rock band to perform an original song. The scene is a powerful showcase of female empowerment and the importance of sticking together as women in male-dominated industries. It’s moments like this that make Pitch Perfect 3 not just a fun movie to watch but also an important one.
Of course, no Pitch Perfect film would be complete without some incredible vocal performances, and Pitch Perfect 3 does not disappoint in this regard. From The Bellas’ cover of “Toxic” by Britney Spears to Ruby Rose’s rendition of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90,” there are plenty of musical moments that will have you tapping your feet and singing along.
The cast of Pitch Perfect 3 is as charming as ever, with Anna Kendrick once again proving why she is one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. Her portrayal of Beca is both relatable and inspiring, making her a character that audiences will continue to root for throughout the film.
But it’s Rebel Wilson who steals the show in Pitch Perfect 3 with her larger-than-life portrayal of Fat Amy. Wilson brings so much energy and humor to the role that it’s impossible not to love her character. Whether she’s diving off buildings or leading The Bellas in a rendition of “Cheap Thrills,” Rebel Wilson proves once again why she is one of Hollywood’s most beloved comedians.
Overall, Pitch Perfect 3 delivers everything fans have come to expect from this beloved franchise while also taking risks with its characters and storylines. It’s a hilarious and heartwarming film that will leave you singing along long after it’s over. As Mark Twain once said, “The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.” And Pitch Perfect 3 has plenty of laughter to go around.
