Review

In the world of cinema, there are movies that capture audiences in the very first moment, and “Narrow Margin” is one of them. This movie is an action-packed thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Directed by Peter Hyams, “Narrow Margin” tells the story of Carol Hunnicutt (played by Anne Archer), who witnesses a murder and becomes the target of a group of ruthless gangsters. She must rely on Deputy District Attorney Robert Caulfield (played by Gene Hackman) to protect her and bring her to safety.

The plot is intriguingly woven around unexpected twists and turns that make “Narrow Margin” an exciting movie to watch. It doesn’t take much time for this masterpiece to hook you with its suspenseful storyline and keep you glued throughout its 97 minutes runtime.

The film opens with an explosive scene where Archer’s character Carol Hunnicutt witnesses a murder while staying in a Los Angeles hotel room. From the onset, it is clear that she has something most dangerous people want. After watching this scene, I couldn’t wait to see what happens next.

Hackman’s character Robert Caulfield arrives at the hotel shortly after Carol witnesses the murder. He initially goes there on a different case but gets drawn into this complex web of violence when he realizes exactly what Carol witnessed. Caulfield knows that he must get Carol out of L.A as soon as possible before it’s too late.

One aspect that stands out about “Narrow Margin” is its cast. Directed by Peter Hyams, Gene Hackman delivers his usual charm with class and makes his character come alive in every scene he graces with his presence. His portrayal of Robert Caulfield was nothing short of top-notch acting.

Similarly, Anne Archer played her part perfectly and brought an intensity that kept viewers guessing about what would happen next at every turn.

As expected from any Jane Austen work, the dialogue in this movie is sharp and witty. The scenes between Caulfield and Carol are filled with snappy repartee. Their back-and-forth banter keeps things light during the tense moments in their journey.

The filmmakers did an amazing job of capturing the essence of early 1990s America, giving “Narrow Margin” an air of nostalgia. The film’s excellent production values and impressive cinematography recreate the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.

The film’s score captures the mood of suspense throughout well enough by elevating each scene’s intensity. From engagement to fight sequences, everything was orchestrated perfectly by regular Hyams collaborator Bruce Broughton.

Another aspect that makes “Narrow Margin” atypical is its smart editing/designing crew. Marcia Hinds’s top-notch editing made sure that every action sequence was packed with a punch while blending perfectly with seamless transitions from one scene to another.

However, some viewers may find this movie a bit too intense for their taste, especially those who prefer less violent movies altogether. Nevertheless, if you love action-packed movies that keep your nerves tingling throughout, then you will love “Narrow Margin.”

Despite receiving mixed reactions from movie critics upon release in 1990, “Narrow Margin” has become a classic thriller over time since its initial release thirty years ago. Its timeless story remains as intriguing today as it did then.

In conclusion, if you have not watched “Narrow Margin,” you should make a point of watching it sooner than later to experience firsthand its intense plotline. This action thriller has all the elements that make it an enjoyable piece of cinema that would captivate any fan of classic thrillers like Silence of lambs and Basic Instinct with ease – making it a must-watch for any serious movie buff out there!
