Review

Loose Cannons is a movie that I’ve had my eye on for a while now, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. The film, directed by Bob Clark and released in 1990, follows the story of two brothers, one gay and one straight, who come from a family of pasta makers in Italy.

The opening scene sets the tone for the entire movie. We see Rocco (played by Dan Aykroyd), the straight-laced brother, delivering a speech at his father’s funeral about how important family is. His brother, Guiseppe (played by the amazing Giancarlo Giannini), interrupts him to reveal that he’s gay and has been living with his partner for years.

This revelation sets off a chain of events that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. The two brothers clash constantly throughout the film as they struggle to come to terms with their differences and reconcile with their past.

But what really makes Loose Cannons stand out is its unapologetic approach to dealing with homosexuality in a time when it was still largely taboo. The movie tackles issues like coming out, homophobia, and even HIV/AIDS without ever feeling preachy or heavy-handed.

The cast is stellar across the board, but special mention has to go to Aykroyd and Giannini for their incredible chemistry. Seeing these two polar opposites bounce off each other is a joy to watch, especially during some of the more hilarious moments in the film.

One scene that stands out in particular involves Rocco struggling to come up with an excuse for why he can’t attend his boss’s daughter’s wedding. Giuseppe suggests telling her that Rocco has “a big-a fat-a headache.” When Rocco protests that this would be insensitive given his boss’s wife recently died of a brain aneurysm, Guiseppe deadpans: “Well, then tell him you have a headache in your foot.”

But as much as the comedy is on point, it’s the heart of the film that really shines through. There are moments of genuine tenderness and emotion that will leave you feeling moved long after the credits have rolled.

One standout scene involves Rocco and Guiseppe reconciling on a beach after a particularly heated argument. As they stare out into the sunset together, Rocco finally opens up about how he feels about his brother’s sexuality.

“I didn’t know how to protect you,” he says. “And I didn’t want to lose you.”

It’s a beautiful moment that epitomizes what makes Loose Cannons so special: its ability to navigate complex emotions with grace and humor.

Despite all of its strengths, Loose Cannons was unfortunately overlooked upon its release and has since fallen into relative obscurity. But for those who do seek it out, they’ll find a movie that is funny, heartfelt, and ahead of its time.

If you’re looking for a film that will leave you feeling uplifted and entertained, then do yourself a favor and check out Loose Cannons. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
